Aetherea Wiki

The Library of Lost Things is an enormous, phantasmal ziggurat that shimmers and fades as adventurers approach it. It is said that in this great library all of the lost secrets and forgotten knowledge of the multiverse may be accessed, if the inquirer has the right knowledge, assistance and grit. Forgotten ideas and dreams, hidden thoughts, and memories of bygone lives are collected here. As are ethereal copies of books and artifacts of great significance that are destroyed or lost to time. The approach to the Library looks like a vast debris field of lost ideas, dream and knowledge from across the ages. Many scholars believe The Library of Lost Things exists as a demiplane within the Ethearal Realm. Scholars also speculate that the Library of Lost Things may be the Ethereal shadow of the Hall of Mandhos, which sits at the base of the shadow current within the Shadowfell - so as all living streams lead to Mandhos, so all ethereal shadows of those lives flow to the Library of Lost Things.

The Lord of Lost Things[]

Also known as Sescitus to the inhabitants of the Etherea, the Lord of Lost Things is an enigmatic master of the Library of Lost Things. The exact nature of this entity is unknown, as Sescitus appears demigodlike, but is venerated by no one and has no cultists or adherents. Many scholars speculate that Sescitus is an unidentified Valar or cosmic functionary of great importance. Sescitus is said to appear as a demihuman silhouette with four eyes, each of a different color - two where the eyes should be and two where the mouth should be. Sescitus rarely is encountered personally, but makes its presence known throughout the Library - its image, plastering on everything. It is said "All things lost find their way to Sescitus." Sescitus's methods of collection appear to be many and vast. The Library, itself (and Sescitus - who dwells within) seems to draw the ethereal aspects of lost things like a magnet draws iron. Naturally accreting ethereal copies of lost ideas, dreams and knowledge waiting to be interred in the Library and further processed - a process known as "finding." Because of this, the approach to the Library is a chaotic minefield of lost souls and tortured memories.

The Keepers[]

Sescitus also employs a peculiar army of ethereal modron-like minions known as Keepers who operate as souless bureaucratic machinery that operates the Library, including "finding," organizing and retrieving its vast contents, assisting with inquiries and research as well as seeking out and retrieving lost things of great value beyond the Ethereal. Similar to modrons, there are multiple classes of Keepers, each varying in power and function. The most visible are the Diadrones that assist inquirers with archival research in the Library. The most feared are the Voldrones, which collect lost things of extraplanar importance and execute bounties on those who would disrupt the Library or the business of "finding" lost things.

Ethereal Escorts[]

It is said that anyone capable of accessing the Ethereal may come upon the library, but the library may only be accessed with the aid of an escort native to the Ethereal Plane, a shaman who can commune with the Ethereal, or a pyschopomp aligned to one of the Outer Planes such as an angel or archon.

Lord of the Gate[]

The Library possesses a single entry gate, sealed by a portcullis and guarded by an enigmatic entity known as the "Lord of the Gate," who appears to have a demigodlike status. The Lord of the Gate has a true neutral alignment and zealously enforces entry based on the requirement of having a suitable Ethereal escort at hand at all times. It's appearance varies, often presenting as a large sized leonine demihuman, sometimes wearing platinum plate armor, sometimes wearing a royal purple toga with loins girded for action, other times wearing a bejeweled priestly garment. Other times the Lord of the Gate presents as a young adult Ethereal Dragon. He is often accompanied by a retinue of Ethereal leonines - including Foo Lions, Lamassus and the occasional Sphynx. More often, if a Sphynx is in residence, it is providing scholarly or research services to inquirers.

Inquirers[]

The Library of Lost Things is a locus of true neutrality. Those who seek lost knowledge from the library and are granted entrance are known as "Inquirers." The Keepers and other denizens of the Library defend the neutrality of the site and maintain the sanctuary and safety of Inquirers with life and limb. For this reason, the Library attracts a motely crowd of Inquirers from every plane and alignment. Adventurers who are admitted are as likely to run into the minion of an Arch Devil researching world domination as they are a legendary hero trying to save the cosmos, a powerful wizard trying to reconstruct a failed experiment or a star-crossed lover trying to reunite with the memory of their lost love. This policy of cosmic neutrality has given rise to extraplanar refugees and fugitives seeking asylum here - many are admitted, if they have the appropriate escort - but their time is always limited, because all legitimate inquiries are finite and eventually come to an end. The approach to the Library is perilous because many more extraplanar voyagers seek admittance as Inquirers than are granted access.

Interior[]

The interior of the Library is a chaotic assortment of ethereal artifacts, shadows and aspects, piled as high and as far as the eye can see. Inquirers must navigate a labyrinth of ethereal clutter - a nearly impossible task without the aid of an Ethereal Guide. With the right help, the denizens of the Library, such as the Keepers, visiting Sphynx and extraplanar scholars can be found within to help inquirers relive dreams, retrieve memories or interact with ethereal copies of artifacts long lost to time.
